Bell Street Project Space (2006-2010) was an artist-run initiative located in a small storefront in Vienna’s second district. I have invited founders Marita Fraser and Alex Lawler to revive Bell Street Project Space temporarily at Beethovenplatz. The artists in this exhibition work in London, Dusseldorf, Amsterdam and Vienna.
Bell Street Project Space had a fantastic program and I hope that this exhibition will give more people a chance to see what it was all about.
This show will be up until 24 September, but please make special note of the opening hours.
Silver Moon (The genesis of a metaphysical superstructure)
Silver Moon is a ʻsuperstructure,ʼ a hypothetical singular work drawing from Architecture, Film, domestic objects and surfaces. This proposed superstructure emerges through a dialectical regeneration of form as each work enters into the space of another, catalyzing progressive states of transformation of objects and images in visual, material and functional realms.
Bonita Bub references the known materiality of design objects, bringing a sense of living form to surfaces of interior space both institutional and domestic. She will produce a new installation of sculptural wall objects.
Frauke Dannert works with representations of architectural space. Her collage work reconstitutes the image qualities of architectural structures in order to build a new architecture of imagined space. She will combine collage and room installation to produce a new site-specific work.
Marita Fraser’s work takes objects such as scarves, printed fabric and uses them to stand in as painting. Paintings are then displayed as sculptural objects, freestanding on frames in space or leaning against the wall. She is producing a new work of sculptural screens, painting and collage.
Alex Lawler sources a wide range of materials, assembling them to form cohesive fields simulating the serene, sublime or hysterical facades of nature. His conceptual concerns also include investigations into the speculative, functional, sensual and didactic possibilities of painting. He will produce a sculptural installation of walls, painting and projection.
Alexandra Navratil works with collected imagery from film, design, science, nature and modernism. Imagined architectural and filmic spaces are reconfigured through reproduction, reflection and repetition. She will show a new video work which uses found footage of text scratched into archival film.
